Dance of the Water Nymphs

Oil on Canvas

60" W x 48" H

A visit to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens in the fall was the inspiration for this painting.  I am fascinated with the reflections of the fall foliage and the waterlilies hovering over them.

Members' Choice Award, Columbus Artists' Guild 2012 Members Exhibit

Award of Merit, 2012 Georgia National Fair

Best in Show, Art in the Armory Exhibit ,2015

While in the planning stages for this painting of one of the ponds at the Atlanta Botaniclal Gardens, I attended a training session to be a sculpture walk docent for the 2012 sculptures in the Columbus Sculpture Walk (GA).  One of the organizers was explaining that the QR codes were to be added to the bases of the works the next day.  Not being technologically savvy, I had never heard of the QR codes although I had seen those little squares on advertisements.  In my mind I visualized what she said as Cue Are code.   It struck me as humorous that even traditional art work was being integrated into the computer age.  Since my husband and I are usually the last to get any of the newest technological gadgets, I decided that my next painting would have to be a part of the 21st Century and have its own QR code.  But no black and white code.  It had to be in color!

Afternoon Light Over Vezelay

Oil on Canvas

36" w x 24" h

Some years ago I was traveling with a group of art majors through southern France.  We spent the night in a monastery atop a hill so steep the bus could not get to the top.  From our dormitory window was this wonderful view of the rooftops and small village below.   I loved the composition and the afternoon light on the buildings.

Autumn at Lake Harding

Oil on Canvas
36" W x 36" H
My husband and I went for a boat ride at Lake Harding one autumn afternoon and these Bradford Pear trees lined a point near the "long bridge",  as the locals call it.  The scene combined both my favorite color and my passion for objects reflected in water and so became the subject matter for this painting.

Birdhouse Slough

Oil on Canvas
18" W x 24" H
This is a scene from Lake Harding in the fall.  My husband spent his summers and weekends at Lake Harding as a boy and traveled all over the waters in his search for the best fishing.  Because this slough had a bird house on a tall pole when he was a boy he continues to call it the birdhouse slough, thus, the title.

Blinded by the Light

30" x 36" oil painting on cradled panel board

"Blinded by the Light" is one of a series of abstractions with which I began experimenting after a workshop in New York.  From a very young age I have loved texture.  The texture in my paintings up to this point has been a result of the use of a palette knife.  But in this painting I have relied on the implied texture created by tools and textiles which were painted and applied to the surface.

Chateau de Chenonceau

Oil on Canvas

40" W x 30" H

While taking an art history course in France, the class studied various art works and architecture of note and then visited what we had studied.  What a way to study art history!  This painting is a result of a field trip to Chenonceau and features the part of the castle which spans the river.  The main portion of the castle is behind the trees to the right.  But my interest was captured by the reflections of the castle and trees in the river.

Early Arrival

Oil on Canvas

37" W x 32" H

On a recent visit to Tuscany with the Il Chiostro company my attention was captured by the bright tablecloths on the tables of this outdoor cafe.  This cafe was in Pisa but cafes lining the streets are typical of the towns in Italy.

"Early Arrival" was juried into the  "LUCE: The Magic of Italian Light"  exhibit at the Site 109 Gallery in New York and won the Waverly Hall Art Group Award in the 2014 Columbus Artists' Guild Exhibit.

Final Destination

Pastel on Pastel Board
18" W x 12" H
For several years when traveling east through Georgia, I have seen this old truck "put out to pasture" near Fort Valley, Georgia.  Last fall I finally stopped to take photos of it.   The old barn with warped boards and various holes through which the light entered was the perfect setting for the truck.

Flight Patterns

36" x 30" on cradled panel board

"Flight Patterns" is another in a series of paintings on panel board which I started at the beginning of 2017.  In this piece the patterns of lines create the bold and subtle textures I am drawn toward.  It begins with layering paint, pulling lines and shapes through the paint and then applying more.  Then I back up and see what the shapes suggest.  Some get emphasized and suggest the direction I  should follow which is how "Flight Patterns" got its name.

In the Studio

Acrylic on Paper

20" W x 30" H

Second Place, 2012 Georgia National Fair

The glasses from the kitchen which have been dropped and cracked find a new purpose in my studio.  While painting one day, I glanced up at these glasses holding my tools and noticed all the interesting reflections of these and the backyard on my glass palette.  Thus they became the subject matter of my next painting in which I used acrylic in a watercolor manner.

This painting is currently on display at the Columbus, Georgia airport.

Pelican Brief

Oil on Canvas

40"W x 30"H

Our good friends generously offered their New Smyrna Beach condo to us again so I returned to the marina to do some more birdwatching.  At the edge of the marina men were cleaning the day's catch and tossing the remains into the water.  Pelicans came swooping in by the dozens for the feast.  A red boat was docked right by the action and the pelicans swimming in and out of the red reflections were fascinating.

Puzzled

36" x 36" Oil on canvas

Several years ago I did a  painting for my daughter in nine panels at her request.  Of course, it was up to mama to help her line those up evenly every time she moved to a new home.  Not an easy task.  But the last time I played around with the order and liked it very much.  The idea of the nine panels and the ability to re-arrange at will came from that experience.  The frame for "Puzzled" was designed by a cabinet maker so that each of the paintings can be placed in any direction (except diagonally) and in any order and still fit within the frame eliminating the need to hang nine separate pieces.

Rite of Passage

Oil on canvas
30"W x 40" H
This is a portrait of my granddaughter at the hairdresser having just had her first "grown-up" hairdo before her role as flower girl in her aunt's wedding.  I caught her with the reflections in the mirrors as she waited patiently for her sister's hair to be finished.   The pose seemed to mirror her personality; calm, serious and sweet.

Solace

Oil on Canvas
60" w x 48"h
Merit Award, 2011 Georgia National Fair
This scene appealed to me because of the calm, contemplative quality.  Not only the mood, but the contrast of the brilliant reds of the boat against the greens in the stand of trees surrounding the lake captured my fancy.   As always, I am fascinated by water;  the reflections in water, objects floating on the surface of water, things under the surface and smooth versus rippled or choppy water.

Life-long friends invited Juanita and I to stay in their condo in New Smyrna this past October (2012) to gather inspiration for some new paintings.  The weekend we planned to go just happened to be the weekend Hurricane Sandy rolled up the Florida coast.  We delayed our departure by one day to avoid the worst of the storm.  We pulled ourselves out of bed our first morning there to catch the sunrise over the ocean and were rewarded with the wonderful colors and storm surf.
